Local School Advisory Council Minutes
September 17, 2009
Ms. Priscilla McHam began the meeting by introducing herself and then having the rest of the council members introduce themselves. She discussed her roll on the council, as well as, the rolls of the other committee members.
Ms. Desire Sanchez reminded the council about Super Saturday on September 26 from 10 – 1 o’clock.
Mr. John Walsh then explained the Title One Budget for Stripling Elementary School. There are two accounts involved. The first is the 420 account (yearly title one account). The second is the 422 account which is stimulus monies. This account money has to be used over a two year period.
Ms. Priscilla McHam stated that she would like to purchase more memo boards so that each classroom teacher had one. At present the school only has four memo boards that are being used in the four intervention classrooms.
There was a request from one of the council members for a list of the number of classrooms on each grade level.
Ms. Priscilla McHam then discusses the confidentiality of the information given at the council meetings and the appropriate use of this information.
Another request was made from a council member to include foreign language classes for our students. This request was made for not only our non-Spanish speaking students to learn Spanish, but for our Spanish speaking students to learn to read and write in their native language.
Ms. Desire Sanchez requested that some the monies from the title one account be used to purchase more SuccessMaker programs for the Parent Center. At present the Parent Center only has 48 programs available for parent check out. Ms. Sanchez stated that the Parent Center needs at least 200 copies of the SuccessMaker program.
Ms. Priscilla McHam then discussed out LSP (Local School Plan) for the 2009-2010 school year. Our LSP will include professional development in the balanced literacy program.
Ms. Karen Harris from the Norcross Public Library talked with the council about their B.U.G. (Bring Up Grades) program. This program will be used in the third grade to help motivate the improvement of student grades. Ms. Nancy Jukins will be the contact person for third grade. The baseline data will be set from the first nine weeks grading period.
Ms. T. Pilson then presented her project playground program for Stripling Elementary. Project playground will be implemented in three steps. Step one will focus on the issue of safety (shading, seating, etc.). The second step would involve recycling and repositioning of existing playground equipment. It would also involve adding new equipments such as swings. The third step would be that of landscaping the playground.
The meeting concluded with Ms. McHam listing the date and time for our next Local School Advisory Council Meeting. The date will be Thursday, November 19, 2009 at 6:30.
Ms. Desire Sanchez then reminded the council about our next parent night which will occur on October 15. She also explained about the Open House and Volunteer Orientation that will take place on October 1.
